Raising the roof

Client: Land Securities
Site: Xscape, Milton Keynes

Built in 2000, Xscape is an iconic part of the Milton Keynes skyline, the city at the centre of the Oxford-Cambridge Arc.

Home to one of the UK’s largest real snow ski slopes and a 16-screen cinema, Xscape’s structural frame contains 5,000 tonnes of steel fabricated to exact tolerances to support its spectacular curved roof.

Rising to a height of 42m, the roof is periodically subject to high winds and Bloom was commissioned by Xscape’s owner Landsec to carry out a thorough fabric inspection.

Bloom deployed a fleet of industry-leading drones to capture images of the roof fabric from every angle, which were forensically analysed to identify any potential risks.

We then worked with Landsec to develop a detailed, long-term maintenance schedule which now forms a central part of the lifecycle planning for Milton Keynes’ most unique leisure landmark.
